CCRAS - Captain Srinivasamurthy Central Ayurveda Research Institute,Chennai

The institute was named after Captain Dr. G. Srinivasa Murthy, a legendary figure in Indian medicine. His disciple, Dr V. Narayana Swamy, founded the institute, initially named Captain Srinivasa Murthy Drug Research Institute for Ayurveda (CSMDRIA) in the year 1963 in IMPCOPS, Chennai, with a motive to study the phytochemical aspects of medicinal plants used in Indian Systems of Medicine. Later, in August 1972, the erstwhile Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (CCRIM&H) took over this Institute. In March 1978, CCRIMH was bifurcated into two separate councils, and this Institute became a part of the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS). Subsequently, in September 2010, the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS) was bifurcated into two individual councils, Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS). Since then, the institute has come under CCRAS. From 2021 onwards, the institute was known as Captain Srinivasa Murthy Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CSMCARI).
